Here is a summary of information shared in a workshop on networking and small talk skills:
Connect Using your 5 Senses
Four Goals of Networking
- Enjoy the moment
- Engage in satisfying connections with others
- Exchange information & ideas
- Explore future opportunities
Connect Using your 5 Senses
- KNOSE: know names, make as many connections between face & name, and remember the second time you meet someone to GUESS their name!
- EYES: make eye contact (it is more rare than you think!)
- HANDS: hand hugs are an essential way to connect with a human being
- MOUTH: your natural face is most likely a serious pose, so SMILE!
- EARS: listen, listen, listen and don't just wait for your turn to talk
Other Networking Tips
- Anticipate Mutual Benefit: remember that every person you cross paths with has a message for you, and you have a message for them
- Accept Mistakes: you are going to screw up, and that is okay
- Create Deposits: think of small, nice things to do for others
- Practice Frequently: use those small moments before a meeting starts, or in the snack line to practice the art of small talk--this is a skill that improves with practice!
- Play Host: even if it isn't your event, finding ways to reach out to others earns bonus points for later!
- Focus on Commonalities: you have something in common with him/her, so dig until you find it

READ:
It’s a Meaningful Life: It Just Takes Practice
by Bo Lozoff (Penguin: NY)
This book is an accessible prescription for happiness that combines reaching IN to expand your spiritual awareness and reaching OUT to build a community through compassion and service. My copy is filled with scribbles and underlines, especially on page 51: “We can do hard. Really, we can....Human beings were designed for the chips to be down sometimes. We can endure some unimaginably hard things and come out better for them.”
